Virtual Domains

Virtual web site hosting allows wrkcs.net to provide inexpensive, high performance web site hosting by utilizing a number of redundant (N+1) web servers to host a number of web sites each. Each web site is unique and each appears to be hosted on it's own server, but without the expense associated with having a unique server for each site. Each of our servers is monitored and if a server is approaching the point of over utilization then we will move sites to a new server to more evenly balance the load. We are committed to providing exceptional service and performance to all of our customers.

Below is a list of Frequently Asked Questions that should answer most of your questions about virtual web sites, if you don't find what you are looking for please email tech@wrkcs.net or call us, our contact information is available here.

  1. What methods can I use to edit my site's pages?
  2. How do I post my site to the web server?
  3. What is a CGI script and how do I use them with my site?
  4. How can I track the visitors to my site and what they view?
  5. Viewing the web server logs for my site.
  6. How often are the logs processed?
  7. How much storage is available for my site?

  • What methods can I use to edit my site's pages?
You can use a variety of methods to edit your site including; graphical WYSIWYG editors such as Netscape Composer, Microsoft Frontpage or Frontpage Express, HoTMetaL, or Netobjects Fusion, you can also use a plain text editor like notepad or Pico (a Unix text editor). Some productivity programs like Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Excel or Corel Wordperfect generally support exporting their files as HTML documents that can be directly published on the world wide web.

  • How do I post my site to the web server?
    Some programs like Frontpage or Fusion have an automatic posting feature that, once set up, will take most of the work out of posting your site. If you are editing your page with a program that does not support directly posting your site you can use an FTP client like WsFTP or CuteFTP or even Windows 9x/NT/2000's built in FTP client, though you will probably prefer one of the first two options. The settings for your client are as follows;
    • Server Name: www.yourdomainname.ext
    • Base Directory: /var/www/nfsclient?/virtuals/yourdomainname/ Note, this is just the domain name, do not include the www. or .com
    • Server Type: Unix
    • Proxy & Firewall Settings: not required for access to our web servers, though your ISP may require these settings. If you are not sure try using none for the proxy and firewall settings.

  • What is a CGI script and how do I use them with my site?
A CGI script is a program (usually written in Perl or C) that runs on a web server and can provide services such as intelligent form handling, database support (such as maintaining a list of users or products) in conjunction with an SQL server, dynamically generates web pages based on a users requests, etc. WRKCS.net can design and program CGI scripts for just about any purpose, for more information please contact us.

  • How can I track the visitors to my site and what they view?
You can track the visitors to your site by using a counter script or by using the web server log analysis tool we make available for your virtual web site (this feature is included with all level 2 and up virtual hosting packages and can be enabled for other virtual domains for a small setup fee). This tool will tell you not only how many visitors view your site, but how many are from unique sites, the search engine(s) or other site that referred them to your site, the times that your site is most viewed (time of day, day of week, and dates), the browses that the viewers are running etc. This will allow you to much better tailor you site to your intended market, and to judge the effectiveness of your site's marketing.

  • Viewing the web server logs for my site.
The logs for your site are hosted on the same web server as your site. For example if your domain is www.mydomain.com and the server hosting your site is nfsclient2 your logs would be at nfsclient2.wrkcs.net/logs/mydomain. Your logs are protected by a username and password which are provided to you either when you signed up for a level 2 or higher virtual domain. If you sign up for logging for other virtual domains you will be provided with a username and password upon the completion of the setup of the log analysis program.

  • How often are the logs processed?
The logs are processed and the log Website updates weekly, at 12:01 AM on Sundays.

  • How much storage is available for my site?
The amount of storage available is dependent on the level of virtual domain that you have signed up for, in situations where you need more you can add more storage for a monthly fee that is dependent on the amount of storage you need. Please see our Virtual Domain Packages information page for more information. Please note: that if you do exceed your allocated storage you will be charged for the amount of storage that is actually in use, so please remember to remove files that are no longer needed for your site.
