WRKCS.net Windows NT 4.0 Setup Guide

The following steps will guide you through setting up an Internet connection to WRKCS.net on Windows NT 4.0.

  • Creating a Dialer
    1. Double click on the 'My Computer' icon on the desktop.
    2. Double click on the 'Dial-Up Networking' icon in the 'My Computer' window.
    3. If you have never used Dial-Up Networking on your computer before, a window explaining that Dial-Up Networking has not been installed, If this is the case, click on the 'Install' button. If not, skip to step 22. Note: You may be prompted for the required files and you may need your Windows NT Install CD.
    4. On the 'Remote Access Setup' windows click the 'Yes' button.
    5. On the first 'Install New Modem' window click the 'Next' button and Windows will search for your modem. Note: If there is a problem finding your modem you will have to call tech support for further assistance.
    6. Click the 'Next' button if Windows found your Modem
    7. Fill in the Area Code box with your area code, and then click the 'Next' button
    8. This screen should tell you that 'Your Modem has been set up successfully, if so, click the 'Finish' button.
    9. You should now see the 'Add RAS Device' window and it should display the modem you just installed, if so click the 'OK' button on this screen.
    10. Now you should see a screen with a line listing the COM port and modem, click on the 'Configure...' button.
    11. On the 'Configure Port Usage' screen, select 'Dial Out Only' if you only use the modem for Internet access, select 'Dial out and Receive calls' if you need your modem to answer the phone for other reasons (e.g. fax, computer answering system, etc), then click the 'OK' button.
    12. Now you should see the same screen as in step 10, now click on the "Network...' button.
    13. On the 'Network Configuration' screen select 'TCP/IP' and make sure the other two options are un-checked, then click on the 'OK' button.
    14. You should now be back at the same screen as in steps 10 & 12 above, click on the 'Continue' button.
    15. You should now see a screen that tells you that 'Dial-Up Networking was successfully installed on your computer', click on the 'Restart' button.
    16. After the computer restarts Open Dial-Up Networking, as you did in Step 1.
    17. You should see a screen that states 'The phonebook is empty.', click on the 'OK' button.
    18. You should now see the 'New Phonebook Entry Wizard' window, Under 'Name the new phonebook entry' type in WRKCS.net Then click on the 'Next' button.
    19. On the 'Server' screen make sure there is a check mark in 'I am calling the Internet', then click on the 'Next' button.
    20. On the 'Phone Number' screen enter your local dial-up number, and check the 'Use Telephony dialing properties' box and click on the 'Next' button.
    21. Now you should see the New Phonebook Entry Wizard final screen telling you to "Press Finish to save 'WRKCS.net'", click on the 'Finish' button.
    22. You should see the 'Dial-Up Networking' window telling you to choose a 'Phonebook Entry to Dial:', in the Dialing from box enter 'Home'.
    23. Now click on the 'More' button and click on 'Edit entry and modem properties...'.
    24. On the 'Edit Phonebook Entry' screen, under the 'Basic' tab make sure that the 'Use another port if busy' box is un-checked.
    25. Click on the 'Server' tab, Make sure you have 'PPP, Windows NT, Windows 95 Plus, Internet' listed in the 'Dial-up server type' box.
    26. Under 'Network Protocols' make sure that 'TCP/IP' is checked and 'IPX/SPX' and 'NetBEUI' are un-checked, now click on the 'TCP/IP Settings...' button.
    27. On the 'PPP TCP/IP Settings' screen make sure that 'Server assigned IP address' is selected.
    28. On the same screen select 'Specify Name
    29. server addresses' and enter 63.166.168.21 in the 'Primary DNS' box and enter 166.102.90.11 in the 'Secondary DNS' box, the click the 'OK' button.
    30. You should be back at the 'Edit Phonebook Entry' screen, click on the 'Security' tab, and make sure that the Be sure that Accept any authentication including clear text is selected, then click on the 'OK' button.
    31. You should be back at the 'Dial-Up Networking' screen, click on the 'More' button again and click on 'Create shortcut to entry...'.
    32. You should now see the 'Create Dial-Up Shortcut' dialog box, select the location to create the shortcut (we recommend the Desktop) and then click on the 'OK' button.
    33. You should again be back at the 'Dial-Up Networking' screen, click on the 'Close' button, and close any other open windows on your desktop.
    34. Now double click on the shortcut you just created and you should see the 'Connect to WRKCS.net' window, enter your WRKCS.net username and password, leave the 'Domain' box empty.
    35. If you don't wish to enter your password every time you connect to the Internet then check the box next to 'Save Password'.
    36. Click on 'OK' and you should then (after a brief wait) see the 'Connection Complete' window, you have just successfully connected to WRKCS.net!
  • Your Computer is now set up to connect to the Internet! You can now go back to the support menu and get the instructions for your browser, email and news reader.
