WRKCS.net Windows 95/98 Setup Guide

The network configurations of Windows 95 and Windows 98 are very similar. The minor differences in Dial Up Networking are basically in the layout of the options.

  • Creating a Dialer
    1. Double click on 'My Computer' on your desktop.
    2. Double click on the 'Dial up Networking' icon.
    3. Double click on the 'Make New Connection' icon. Either a screen with information on how to setup a dialer on it will be displayed, or you will be asked to type a name for the computer you're dialing. If it's the first screen, click next, otherwise go to the next step.
    4. Type "WRKCS.net" in the 'Type a name for the computer you're dialing' field. Then click 'next'.
    5. On the next screen you will be prompted to enter the phone number for the service they are dialing, area code first. For the area code, type in "814". For the telephone number type you local dial-up number then click the 'Next' button.
    6. Click the 'Finish' button.
    7. Right click on the icon for the dialer you just created (it will be named 'WRKCS.net'), then click on the properties option on the menu that pops up.
    8. On the 'General' tab, Uncheck the 'Use area code and dialing properties' checkbox.
    9. Click on the 'Server Types' tab at the top of the window.
    10. Uncheck 'Log onto Network'.
    11. Uncheck 'NetBEUI' and 'IPX/SPX Compatible' in the protocols section of the window.
    12. Click on the 'Advanced' button next to TCP/IP.
    13. Select 'Server Assigned IP Address' at the top of the screen.
    14. Select 'Specify Name Server Addresses', and enter 63.166.168.21 for the primary DNS and 166.102.90.11 for the secondary.
    15. Click on 'OK' on the advanced window, then click on OK on the WRKCS.net connection window.
    16. To place a shortcut on the desktop, right click on the dialer, then left click on "create shortcut". The screen that comes up will say something to the effect of "Cannot create shortcut here, place shortcut on the desktop instead?" click 'Yes'.
    17. Close the 'Dial-Up Networking' window.
  • Your Computer is now set up to connect to the Internet! You can now go back to the support menu and get the instructions for your browser, email and news reader.
