WRKCS.net Technical Support - Uploading Images for ebay

Guide to uploading your auction images to your wrkcs.net personal user Web page space.

An excellent step-by-step tutorial on the entire process of creating, editing and sizing your images is located at eBay's site at: http://pages.ebay.com/help/basics/phototut-1.html. WRK Computer Systems also offers an image scanning service as well as digital photography services, for more information contact us, our contact information is available http://www.wrkcs.net/contact.html.

It is highly recommended that read the information at the eBay page listed above for instructions before you attempt to upload pictures. This page is only intended to help you upload your images to your personal Web space on the wrkcs.net server. This guide's information is specifically for WS_FTP but many of the settings will also work with other FTP programs.

Once you have acquired, edited and stored your images in a directory (folder) on your hard drive (we suggest c:\ebay\ or c:\auctions\), you are ready to upload them to WRKCS.net. Please note: eBay recommends that your images meet the following guidelines (and we cannot stress the importance of these guidelines enough;

  • Format - JPEG (.jpg or .jpeg), GIF is not recommended.
  • Image dimensions - 3"x5" or 4"x6" (at 96dpi that would be 288x480 or 384x576 pixels)
  • Image size - 50k or less (note: the smaller the image the faster it loads, but be careful not to make the image too small to see the detail of the object)

Once you have downloaded and installed WS_FTP (WsFTP along with many other programs are available from our TUCOWS mirror at http://tucows.wrkcs.net you are ready to begin uploading your images to the wrkcs.net user Web page server.

Double click on the WS_FTP icon to start the program. A window will open called the 'Session Window'. Click on the "New" button and fill in the fields using the following information:

  • Click On 'New'.
  • Profile Name: Select any descriptive name you want such as 'Auction Upload'
  • Host Name/Address: users.wrkcs.net
  • Host Type: Select 'Automatic Detect'
  • User ID: Enter your WRKCS.net user name.
  • Password: Enter your WRKCS.net password (Check the Saved Password box if you want it to remember your password).
  • Click on the 'start-up' tab.
  • Initial Remote Host Directory: /public_html'
  • Initial Local Directory:  Enter the location of your images on your hard drive. (example: C:\auction\ )
  • Click  the 'Apply' button.
  • Now you're ready to post your images to your user Web space at wrkcs.net

Connect to wrkcs.net using the normal dialup connection and then click  the 'Connect' button. The 'Session Window' will be replaced with a window with two panes. The left-hand pane displays the contents of the directory you selected on your hard drive. The right-hand pane displays the contents of your personal Web page space on the WRKCS.net user server. To transfer your images:

  1. Click on the name of the image you want to send from list in the left-hand pane. (you may select multiple files to upload at once by holding down the 'Ctrl' key on the keyboard while clicking on the filenames in the left pane otherwise you must repeat steps 1 and 2 for each image you wish to upload).
  2. Click the arrow that points to the right.
  3. WS_FTP will automatically send a copy of the image to the wrkcs.net server. (Once the image name appears in the right side window you know that the image has been successfully transferred).
  4. Finally: To make sure you have done everything correctly you can test the URL by typing it in your Web  Browser. If the image appears you have done everything correctly. (If your user name is webuser and the image is called item1.jpg then the URL would be: http://users.wrkcs.net/~webuser/item1.jpg)
  5. You can now go to eBay and provide them with the URL for a picture for each item you are auctioning.

Additional Tips and Hints

  • To ensure that you don't type the URL incorrectly when you get to eBay just highlight the URL in your web Browser (when you test the URL), select "Edit" then "Copy" (or press 'Ctrl'+'C'). When you get to eBay and begin to enter information for your item just click on the 'Picture URL' block and paste using the "Edit" and "Paste" (or press 'Shift' + 'Ins'). Then you're sure the link will work.
  • In the future when you want to upload images simply click on the WS_FTP icon, select the 'Auction Upload' profile, and click on the 'Connect' button.
  • Once the auction is ended and you no longer need to have an image on the server you should delete it. You have 5MB of space on the server. If you exceed your allocated space you will be charged for the additional space that is in use. (To delete an image simply click on the image in the right window, then press the 'Delete' button. Verify you want to delete the image by selecting "yes". When the image disappears from the right-hand pane it is deleted from the server).
